What is Sinology?

Sinology is the scholarly study of China, encompassing its language, literature, history, philosophy, culture, and society. Traditionally, Sinology focused on classical Chinese texts, Confucian philosophy, historical records, and ancient literature. For example, scholars might study The Analects of Confucius to understand moral and social philosophy in ancient China or examine Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) by Sima Qian to explore early Chinese history and historiography.

Modern Scope of Sinology

In modern times, Sinology has expanded to include contemporary Chinese society, politics, economics, and international relations. Researchers may analyze topics such as the impact of economic reforms since the 1980s, the rise of China as a global power, or modern Chinese literature and cinema. Sinologists often combine linguistic expertise in Mandarin or classical Chinese with knowledge of cultural, historical, and social contexts to interpret China’s past and present accurately.
