George Orwell’s Animal Farm is one of the most widely recognized political allegories in modern literature. First published in 1945, the novella presents the story of farm animals who overthrow their human owner and attempt to establish a society based on equality, freedom, and collective ownership. What begins as an inspiring revolution gradually develops into a new form of oppression. The animals discover that removing an unjust ruler does not necessarily remove injustice itself. The intellectual and historical background of the book is closely connected with the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the subsequent rise of Stalinist rule in the Soviet Union. Orwell was particularly concerned with the way revolutionary ideals could be distorted by political leaders who gained control over institutions, information, and the instruments of force. Through the fictional Animal Farm, he examines how power can become concentrated in the hands of a small group and how ordinary people can be persuaded to accept growing inequality.
