Description

Immunization remains one of the most cost-effective public health interventions for reducing childhood morbidity and mortality. However, the pain associated with vaccination is a major source of distress for infants, parents, and healthcare providers. This pain can lead to vaccine hesitancy, poor compliance, and negative healthcare experiences in early life. Karp’s Infant Calming Technique, popularly known as the
“5 S’s”, offers a simple, nonpharmacological approach to soothing infants during painful procedures. Despite its proven effectiveness in other settings, there is limited documented evidence on its use during routine
immunization in Nigeria.

This book presents the findings of a study conducted at the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, to evaluate the effect of Karp’s technique in reducing immunization injection pain among infants. It is our hope that the results and recommendations contained herein will guide nurses, doctors, and policymakers in adopting humane, evidence-based pain management strategies in our immunization clinics.
