Since the publication of Volume 1, there has been growing recognition of the need to prioritize pain management as an integral part of routine immunization services in Nigeria. The evidence presented in the first volume on Karp’s Infant Calming Technique sparked important conversations among healthcare providers, policymakers, and caregivers about making vaccination a more humane experience for infants.

Volume 2 builds on this foundation by expanding the scope of inquiry. It examines the implementation of non-pharmacological pain management strategies across diverse healthcare settings, explores caregiver perceptions and provider training needs, and highlights innovations that can make the “5 S’s” more accessible at the primary healthcare level. This volume also presents new data on the sustainability, acceptability, and cost-effectiveness of scaling these interventions beyond tertiary centers.

It is our hope that the findings and practical recommendations in this book will further equip nurses, community health workers, doctors, and program managers with evidence-based tools to reduce pain and fear associated with immunization. Ultimately, we seek to ensure that no child has to endure unnecessary pain in the course of receiving life-saving vaccines.
