Description

Acts of worship are directly connected not only to the universe but also to human psychology. They manifest as a means of communication between the servant and the Creator, as well as reflections of individual responsibility and social obligation through specific rituals. Worship, which is a duty of servitude, is also a divine grace. Both the definitive texts (naṣṣ) and the consensus of scholars affirm the necessity of seeking God’s help and strength in the performance of worship. Therefore, in this study, the wisdom behind fundamental acts of worship—prayer (ṣalāt), almsgiving (zakāh), pilgrimage (ḥajj), fasting (ṣawm), and striving in God’s cause (jihād)—has been examined in light of the works of Māturīdī. Prior to this, the concepts of worship, wisdom, and the relationship between worship and wisdom were also explored.
